Photos: In the Kitchen

A common kitchen set-up: cooking outside on a charcoal cooker

An outdoor kitchen. One pot is propped up on rocks and a wood fire can be built underneath.  There is a cooker in front of it. There is also a charcoal cooker towards the back right. On the far right is the mortar for the mortar and pestle.

  1. Quite a nice Dutch oven. Where do these pots come from? The biggest mortar I have ever seen. They do some serious mashing. A fairly organized "kitchen." Do they leave all these things outside all the time? If so, is there a problem with theft?

  2. The pots can be purchased at my local market, but I don't know who manufactures them initially. The process can't be too standardized because some have defects, such as off-center handles.

The mortar in the picture is a standard size for my village. Mortars are used often for mashing yams but also for grinding dry food. In the south, my host family used their mortar to make palm oil.

There are always kitchen supplies outside at my neighbors' houses. There is usually at least one neighbor around, but if everyone leaves, the last person locks the gate. Our compound is surrounded by a wall. Therefore, there is little chance of theft at my house.
